Jagadguru Sankaracharya H.H.Shri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal’s First visit to Bombay:

Representatives of the Samaj with Allur Dr. Viswanatha Sivacharyar visited Kanchipuram and requested Jagadguru Sankaracharya H.H. Shri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal to suggest a suitable date for the Maha Kumbhabhishekam. As recommended by His Holiness, the Samaj decided to perform the Maha Kumbhabhishekam on 12th December 1991. The Samaj requested His Holiness to visit Mumbai alongwith Jagadguru Sankaracharya H.H. Shri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal and participate in the Maha Kumbhabhishekam functions. His Holiness Jagadguru Sanakaracharya Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal visited Mumbai for the first time to participate in the Maha Kumbhabhishekam functions. 

Jeernodharana Ashtabandana Swarnabandana Maha Kumbhabhishekam:

As per our ancient scriptures, Maha Kumbhabhishekams will have to be performed once in 12 years. A balalayam was set and mini kumbhabhishekam was performed for the deities conscrated at the Balalayam. Daily pooja rituals was performed at the Balalayam. In the meantime, repair and renovation of the Sanctum nd entire Temple Complex was undertaken. A huge Shamiana was erected for the purpose of Yagashala and for the cultural events in adjoining ground..

POOJA PROCEDURES:
Pooja rituals for Lord Vinayagar, Lord Muruga and Goddess Durga are performed in accordance with Agama Sastras. Accordingly, the rituals for Lord Vinayagar, Lord Muruga, and Goddess Durga Devi were performed by Sivacharyas from Tamil Nadu as per Agama Sasthras under the able guidance by Sivashri Allur Dr. V.Viswanatha Sivacharyar. Traditionally, the Pooja rituals for Guruvayurappan and Dharma Sastha temples, especially in Kerala are performed as per Tantra Sastras. Accordngly, the rituals for Lord Guruvayurappan and Lord Dharma Sastha were performed by Nambudris from Kerala as per Tantra Sastras.

YAGASHALA RITUALS:
This time again, Uttama Paksha Yagashala (33 Homa Kundams for Lord Muruga – which is the maximum as prescribed in the sastras) and one each for Lord Vinayagar, Goddess Durga Devi, Navagrahas, was set up. Similarly, the Yagashala for Lord Guruvayurappan and Lord Dharma Sastha was set up. The rituals commenced on 8th December 1991 and, the Jeernodharana Ashtabandana Swarnabandana Maha Kumbhabhishekam of Thiruchembur Murugan Temples was performed on 12th December 1991 in the benign presence of Jagadguru Sanakaracharya H.H. Shri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal and Jagadguru Sanakaracharya H.H.Shri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham. A large number of devotees participated in all the functions and made the Kumbhabhishekam eventful and memorable. On this auspicious occasion, “Swarnabandhanam” and Gold Plating of “Dwajasthambam” (Flagpost)” were dedicated to Lord Muruga.
